This year, Diwali, the festival of lights, falls on Monday, October 24 in accordance with the lunar calendar and celebrations tend to last for five days. On Monday, October 24, the House of Representatives formally recognized and honored Diwali which is celebrated by over a billion Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and Buddhists. This celebration is a time for family, friends, and the community. May the light of the festival brighten your life with joy and happiness.

District Updates
The temperatures are dropping and many of us are thinking about turning on the furnace. I share your concern about high heating costs this winter and would like to share with you information that may help ease the financial burden of paying heating costs this winter. - The Needham Police and Public Health will be participating in National Drug Take Back day. On October 29 from 10 am to 2 pm, bring prescription and over-the-counter medications for safe disposal. To learn more about the event, click here.
- In Needham, the League of Women Voters provides an educational toolkit for Needham voters in the upcoming state election. The toolkit provides information from ballot questions to candidates that are running for office. To access the toolkit, click here.
- In Dover, Powisset Farm is hosting a family Halloween event on Friday, October 28 at 3 pm. The Halloween event will feature fall activities such as hay rides, a pumpkin scavenger hunt, and a variety of fall treats. To learn more and to RSVP, click here.

Statewide Updates
- On Monday, October 17, the student loan forgiveness application officially launched. The program provides eligible borrowers with full or partial discharge of loans up to $20,000 to Federal Pell Grant recipients and up to $10,000 to non-Pell Grant recipients. - The Commonwealth announces new SNAP Nutrition Education Program Vendors. The SNAP-Ed program is a federally funded grant program administered by the Massachusetts Department of Transitional Assistance. The program provides nutrition education, obesity prevention, and the promotion of healthy lifestyle choices. The new vendors include Ascentria Care Alliance, the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, the University of Massachusetts Extension Nutrition Education Program, and the YMCA of Greater Boston. - The Center for Disease Control (CDC) expands updated COVID-19 vaccines to children ages 5 – 11. The updated COVID-19 boosters add Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 spike protein components which restore protections from previous vaccinations by targeting more transmissible variants.
